"Aotearoa"

Un piccolo aggiornamento sulla parola “Aotearoa”!

Aotearoa (ow-tey-ah-row-ah) è il nome di Nuova Zelandia nella lingua Māori, e ci sono due ragioni perché mi piace davvero questa parola: 1. Penso che suoni molto bene come parola! 2. In Māori, significa “la terra della lunga nuvola bianca”, e questo è proprio figo!!

Penso che sia molto interessante vedere come culture diverse chiamano i loro stessi paesi. Per esempio 中国, il nome Cinese per la Cina, significa “il regno centrale”. I giapponesi chiamano il loro paese 日本, literalmente “radice del sole”, quindi “il paese del sole levando”! Non vengono tanti altri esempi in mente al momento... (qualcuno ne ha?) però Nuova Zelandia è un esempio fantastico, un paese che in Inglese è chiamato col nome di una provincia dei Paesi Bassi (Zeeland), ed in Māori col nome di questa:

A little update on the word “Aotearoa”!

Aotearoa (ow-tey-ah-row-ah) is the Māori name for New Zealand, and there’re two reasons why I love it: 1. I think it sounds really cool, and 2. In Māori, it means “land of the long white cloud”, and that’s so lekker!!

I think it’s really interesting to see what different people call their own countries. For example 中国 (zhōnggúo), the Chinese name for China, means “middle kingdom”. The Japanese call their country 日本 (nippon), literally “sun root”, hence “land of the rising sun”! I can’t think of anything else right now... (anyone have any?) but New Zealand is such a great example, a country that in English is named after a province of the Netherlands (Zeeland), and in Māori after this:
